We will be working with volunteers from our Beyond Coal campaign on campus at UNC Chapel Hill to educate students about politics and the environment, and encouraging students to get out and vote! Our campaign will be targeting Duke Energy and their ties with ALEC, a nonpartisan organization with a history of attacking clean energy legislation. Help us move Duke's dirty money out of politics in NC and clean up our elections!

Just weeks after 77% of UNC’s student body voted in favor of coal divestment, our Student Congress has voted overwhelmingly in favor of divesting the university’s $2.1 billion endowment from the dirtiest, most carbon intensive coal mining and coal burning companies in the nation.

On Tuesday, more than 4,200 students at UNC Chapel Hill demonstrated overwhelming support for divesting the university’s $2.1 billion endowment from the dirty coal industry. The referendum passed by a huge margin with 77% of UNC students voting in favor of coal divestment.

The campaign has gathered endorsements from The Daily Tar Heel, Campus Y, Sierra Student Coalition, Roosevelt Institute, UNC Young Democrats, UNC Residence Hall Association and Student Power UNC and all five student body president candidates. The weeks leading up to the election proved how powerful and important it is to build broad support and meaningful coalition partners across campus to get things done.

Thus far the three of us working on the Power Vote campaign at UNC have been stuck behind a wall of uncertainty behind the messaging and appropriate method of delivery for Power Vote. Today, we struck out, hit this "wall," but realized that we ready to climb over it. We are looking at the rest of this week and National Voter Registration Day of Action next Tuesday to redeem our short comings. We have a renewed attitude and new ideas of how to get the message of Power Vote across to the students of UNC. We hope to build off the following slogan: VOTE because we are the future and VOTE for clean energy because clean energy is the future. Using this message, and more specific information about how this election will impact our future, we hope to be proactive in educating students, and getting some on board with the campaign.

With that said, we are beginning to plan for next week to make up for today.
