Media

Reporters are going to be hungry for youth election stories, especially ones that are as interesting as what you're plotting (Gorecasts, polling parties, St Louis students handing out M&Ms to save the metro (proposition m- get it?), critical mass bike rides to the polls, etc, etc).

The Gorecast is the PERFECT way to get campus and local reporters excited about covering all your genius plans leading up to the election. And getting media is not only easy, but it is a crucial component of good GOT(P)V work. In total of all this should not take more than 30 minutes of your precious time so no excuses, let's make our voices roar.

  1. Everyone who is having a Gorecast viewing party should have a goal of getting a campus media hit. Don't overthink it, don't stress it. Just pick up the phone or stop by the campus paper office and invite them to come cover the Gorecast. Do it today and then remind them next week. If you're like most schools that have already gotten some great Power Vote coverage make sure to call that reporter back as well and invite them to come.

  2. If you are planning to do GOTV work the Gorecast is the perfect opportunity to re-engage the local media on the amazing work you're doing for Power Vote. Just fill out this template media advisory and send it to local media outlets by Monday morning. If you still need a local media list please email me asap (Brianna@energyaction.net) and I'll hook you up with a great media list that you can send the advisory to.

  3. Make a quick round of calls to reporters on Monday or Tuesday to make sure they got your advisory and know about the Gorecast. Make sure to mention any cool extra things you're doing for the Gorecast (prominent speakers, cool visuals, a dorm storm immediately following, etc). While you've got them on the phone, also mention the other cool GOTV activities you've got planned leading up to the election and see if they'd be interested in covering those things as well.

  4. On Wednesday morning send out your advisory again and do 1 more round of quick calls just to make sure they have everything they need. Also, try to get a confirmation from your campus paper/radio station in the morning that they'll be sending someone that night.

  5. Send me links to all your media hits so I can squeel with delight and add them to the Power Vote newsroom.
