Oh, what a (power vote) night- sharing the stage with Al Gore!

October 29, 2008 | By Brianna Cayo Cotter

Just spoke to Jessy Tolkan, Energy Action Coalition and Power Vote's amazing Executive Director about sharing the stage (and the last hour) with former Vice President and Nobel Laurette Al Gore.

    "What an exciting night!

I had the privilege of meeting and introducing former Vice President and Nobel Laurette Al Gore during the special Power Vote webcast he made to young people this evening. His speech was inspiring and a true call to action to everyone to get out and vote on November 4 and start putting our country on the track towards 100% clean energy.

Although it's not every day you get hang out with a Nobel prize winner, what was even more exciting than what happened in that little studio in Nashville was what has been brewing around this country for the last few weeks and what kicked off in earnest tonight.

Exciting blog posted by our good friends at 1Sky

So we’ve been hearing a lot of talk about clean coal in the Presidential race, but want to learn the truth about clean coal? Coalisnottheanswer.org just released this great video informing the American public how dirty coal really is!

The truth about coal. The coal industry has spent over $40 million on misleading advertising that touts coal as the next great thing to solve the energy crisis. It’s time for a reality check. We will not stand by idly as they spew their propaganda.

PV Super Heroes Leave Educational Treats

Trick or (Power) Vote 012Today Power Vote Eugene-style partnered up with the Oregon Bus Project for Trick or Vote, a youth canvass in costume. Hitting the streets for GOTV and decorating apartment buildings with super-fancy door hangers, volunteers spoke to their neighbors about green jobs and clean energy in Power-Vote-super-hero costumes.

The event started at a local concert venue, where we were greeted by Senator Ben Westlund, who spoke intensively about the role of the U.S., our energy policy and renewable energy.

100 Gorecasts registered! - Can we get to 200?

    October 24, 2008 | By Whit Jones

GREAT NEWS! We just crossed 100 registered Gore Webcasts. And all that since last Friday. Go us! Tons of new schools are hoping on board Power Vote for this fun and exciting event.

This weekend, many of our partners will be inviting their members to join these viewing parties, so its important that we have as many events created as possible.

So... let's get those events registered. Even if we don't have final details, we can correct them later. http://events.powervote.org/signup

And if you needed more incentive....The Top 3 Schools with the most RSVPs on the Power Vote website by Sunday at Midnight get a shout out from Al Gore.

Still need a fun event idea? Check out the flyer above. It's for University of Maryland's Blood, Guts and (Al) Gore event - A Halloween themed event that will launch volunteers into a costumed dorm storm!

Van Jones a NY Times bestseller

    October 23, 2008 | By Danny Marx

Exciting news from our great friends and partners Green For All (www.greenforall.org):

Van Jones' new book, The Green Collar Economy is an NYTimes bestseller! The first-time author's book made it to the #12 spot on The New York Times' best-seller list during its very first week in print. This makes Van the first African-American writer to pen an environmental best-seller.

Read about the push to make the book a bestseller on The Huffington Post.
And a Q&A with Van Jones.

Van's book was catapulted on to this and other bestseller lists with a minimal marketing budget. Its success was the result of a huge grassroots and netroots effort: blogosphere buzz and an email campaign to partners, friends and other activists made it happen.

In the next two days, we're trying to make this success a national story about the power of the netroots and the movement for an inclusive green economy. Please write about this success on your blogs, so that we can CELEBRATE and show the power of this growing movement! More details are below.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Towson Energy Activists Go For the Gold!

    October 21, 2008 | By Danny Marx

Taken from our sister blog at www.itsgettinghotinhere.org:

Besides being the headquarters of the amazing Towson Energy Activists, Towson, Maryland is also the hometown of Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. Normally this piece of information wouldn’t matter but on October 4th the city of Towson organized a big parade in his honor. Being resourceful organizers, our plan was plain and simple; use this massive and energetic crowd of students and community members to talk about clean energy and the upcoming election!

York Rd was lined with people. Our first pledge signers were a group of cheerleaders marching in the parade. As we made our way down the street we encountered familiar faces and some unfamiliar ones. Among the organizations in support of the PowerVote platform were the Campus Activities Board, Circle K, the Student Government Association and the sorority Phi Mu.

Power Vote Executive Director to be on distinguished panel

    October 20, 2008 | By Danny Marx

Our very own Executive Director Jessy Tolkan to be featured on a distinguished panel entitled:

Campus Sustainability Day VI: Climate Realities, Challenges and Progress in Higher Education

    Webcast Description:

Nearly every powerful interest in the world has now accepted the reality of climate change and the impact of cumulative human activities on the climate. Politicians, sociologists, economists, business people, and military think tanks are focusing more and more on what many are calling the likelihood of "climate disruption," which is as just scary as it sounds.
